Celebrating women’s empowerment beyond one day

Celebrating women’s empowerment beyond one day

13.03.2024 l by Lyndsay Jensen

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, reminds us of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the need to amplify women’s voices worldwide. At DRH Lindersvold, we explore the importance of International Women’s Day and advocating for women’s rights beyond a single day of commemoration.

DRH Lindersvold is a beacon of hope for women seeking empowerment and education in both a practical and academic way. Through our two programmes – Volunteer For Change and Nature Now, we strive to break down barriers and provide opportunities for individuals to thrive. From vocational training to leadership development, we equip our students with the tools to assert their rights and make meaningful contributions to the projects they support in various countries.

International Women’s Day focuses on reflection and action. On this day, we honour the trailblazers who paved the way for gender equality and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for justice and inclusion. However, the question still arises: why confine the celebration of women’s empowerment to just one day? Shouldn’t we pay more attention to women’s rights throughout the year? While International Women’s Day is a powerful symbol of solidarity and activism, it is crucial to recognise that fighting for gender equality is a daily endeavour. True progress requires sustained effort and commitment from individuals and institutions alike.

As a school, we understand the importance of continuous advocacy for women’s rights. Our programmes are designed to support long-term change and empower women to challenge societal norms and stereotypes. By promoting education, economic independence, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills, our commitment to the projects is to help local women feel supported, valued and respected.

Extending the conversation beyond International Women’s Day allows for a deeper investigation of the inequalities that perpetuate gender-based discrimination. It encourages us to confront uncomfortable truths and work towards transformation. Whether advocating for equal pay, combating gender-based violence, or promoting women’s representation in decision-making processes, there are countless ways to advance the cause of gender equality year-round. At DRH Lindersvold, we strive to continue to celebrate women’s achievements and redouble our efforts towards building a more inclusive and equitable world for all.

What is Volunteer for Change

The Volunteer for Change programme is based on two concepts: Sustainable development and international solidarity.

The programme lasts ten months and is an opportunity to learn about the big issues of our time – and to do something about them in practical terms.

The Volunteer for Change programme provides an opportunity for people from the Global North to learn from, and volunteer with, community-driven development programmes in the Global South run by members of Humana People to People. These projects respond to challenges within the spheres of community development, education, sustainable farming, early childhood development and mitigation of the climate crisis.

The fast-paced and action-based Volunteer for Change programme takes ten months:

3 months of training and preparation in Denmark

6 months of assisting a sustainable development programme at a Humana People to people project in the Global South

1 month of reflection, evaluation, and sharing of experiences.

DRH Lindersvold – The Travelling School for Change – welcomes everyone who is interested in working together with us to address humanitarian and development challenges worldwide.

Let’s create a better world together.
