Nurturing humanism and empowering potential in a divided world

At DRH Lindersvold, we are committed to humanism and the empowerment of individuals in a world increasingly torn by division. Our ethics are rooted in the belief that every person holds the potential to enact change, not only within themselves but also in the broader society. This guiding principle is more relevant than ever as we confront the rising tide of right-wing extremism across Europe and the recent riots in England.

Humanism, at its core, is about recognising the inherent dignity and worth of every individual. At DRH Lindersvold, we strive to instil this understanding in all who walk through our doors. Our approach to education and community development is centred on the idea that everyone has unique strengths and capabilities that, when nurtured, can contribute to the common good. This is not just about academic or professional success; it’s about having a mindset that values empathy, cooperation, and social responsibility.

As we celebrate International Humanitarian Day in August, we reflect on the global community’s responsibility to uphold these values, especially in times of crisis. The rise of right-wing ideologies in Europe poses a direct challenge to the principles of inclusion and diversity that form the bedrock of humanism. These movements often capitalise on fear and uncertainty, promoting division and intolerance instead of unity and understanding.

The recent riots in England further highlight the urgency of our mission. Following the tragic and horrific killing of 3 young girls at a Taylor Swift dance event, false information circulated on social media that the suspect was an Islamist migrant. This led to violent attacks on Muslim people and property across the UK. While many of the assailants claim to act on concerns over immigration and the perceived erosion of British culture, their actions are based on violence and xenophobia

In a time when humanism’s values are under threat, we at DRH Lindersvold remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting understanding, compassion, and the belief that every person can make a difference. As we mark International Humanitarian Day, let us reaffirm our dedication to these principles and work together to build a more just and inclusive world. We encourage our students and partners to view themselves as agents of change, capable of influencing the future direction of their communities and beyond.

Warm regards,
Tina Whittington

What is Volunteer for Change

The Volunteer for Change programme is based on two concepts: Sustainable development and international solidarity.

The programme lasts ten months and is an opportunity to learn about the big issues of our time – and to do something about them in practical terms.

The Volunteer for Change programme provides an opportunity for people from the Global North to learn from, and volunteer with, community-driven development programmes in the Global South run by members of Humana People to People. These projects respond to challenges within the spheres of community development, education, sustainable farming, early childhood development and mitigation of the climate crisis.

The fast-paced and action-based Volunteer for Change programme takes ten months:

3 months of training and preparation in Denmark

6 months of assisting a sustainable development programme at a Humana People to people project in the Global South

1 month of reflection, evaluation, and sharing of experiences.

DRH Lindersvold – The Travelling School for Change – welcomes everyone who is interested in working together with us to address humanitarian and development challenges worldwide.

Let’s create a better world together.
