About meat consumption

About meat consumption

By now most of us have heard that meat is bad for the environment. And some of us have taken steps to eat less meat. A few have even rejected it completely in their diet. But how much meat will actually cover your need for protein? Not a lot.

The average daily intake should be around 56 grams for male and 46 for women. So, in fact most of us shouldn’t have more than 150 grams of chicken or beef and a few almonds the whole day. A lot of people in the world eat more meat than that for lunch. And then eat meat again for dinner.

While a lot of countries are lowering their meat intake still other countries are increasing theirs. China more than doubled their intake the last 25 years, while New Zealand and Denmark has decreased. Countries like Bangladesh and India seem to be almost vegetarian with their meat intake under five kilos per person per year.

Many places the chicken meat consumption is rising, and it is better for the environment as a whole. But we eat the same amount of beef worldwide and our overeating is still affecting our planet. The world now produces more than four times the quantity of meat as it did fifty years ago.

It is imperative that we take a look inside ourselves and our values. A lot of people are seeing eating meat as a sign of wealth. But is this type of wealth really worth the ruining of our nature?
