Living and Learning Together

A Community that feels like home

At our volunteer school, life isn’t just about lessons and projects. It’s about the way we live together: how we share spaces, ideas, and responsibilities. We like to say the school is a little like a garden: it grows strong when everyone waters it. Every person who joins adds something unique, a new skill, a different perspective, a fresh laugh in the kitchen. Over time, these small contributions weave into a strong fabric of friendship and trust.

Living in a community also means learning to adapt. Sometimes you wake up to someone playing music while cooking breakfast, or you find yourself discussing world politics while folding laundry. These little everyday moments remind us that community is not just about structure; it’s about connection.

The rhythm of meetings

That’s why we keep community life at the center of everything we do. Each week, we gather for a common meeting. It’s a time to check in, share updates, and make decisions together. Sometimes it’s about big things, like planning a climate action event or organizing a recycling drive. Sometimes it’s about small things, like moving the bookshelf so the sunlight reaches the reading corner. Either way, the meeting is our heartbeat. It keeps us in rhythm.

The common meeting is also where leadership grows. Each person takes turns facilitating, learning to guide discussions, keep time, and make sure everyone’s voice is heard. These are not just skills for school life; they are life skills that carry into any future workplace, project, or family.

Shared work and shared care

Of course, running a school takes more than ideas. It takes action, the kind you can see, smell, and sometimes scrub. We have a kitchen rota so meals don’t just magically appear (though the cook do work some magic with whatever’s in the pantry). Cooking together is one of our favourite community moments: the sound of chopping vegetables, the smell of fresh bread, the laughter over who forgot to put the rice on. Sharing a meal means sharing our cultures, our flavors, our stories.

Cleaning is another rota, and while it’s not as glamorous as cooking, it’s just as important. Sweeping floors, wiping tables, and keeping our classrooms and common spaces tidy isn’t just about hygiene, it’s about respect. It’s a reminder that this school belongs to all of us, and it’s up to us to care for it. When everyone pitches in, the work is lighter, and the space feels brighter.

And then there’s practical action; the projects we take on together. Whether it’s repairing a broken chair, planting herbs by the entrance, or building shelves from reclaimed wood, these moments connect us to the place and to each other. They turn “this is where I study” into “this is my home base.”

Building a way of life

Community life is not always perfect. Sometimes we disagree, sometimes we forget our rota day. But living and working together teaches us patience, kindness, and the value of showing up for one another. Mistakes become lessons, and challenges become stories we laugh about later.

Here, we’re not just running a school, we’re building a way of life. One meeting, one meal, one shared task at a time. And in that way of life, every person becomes both a student and a teacher, both a giver and a receiver. That’s the true beauty of living and learning together.
